Luxembourg Police delivers for the second time CEPOL activity on Forensics-Emerging Technologies

Following last year’s successful activity, the Grand Ducal Police delivered for the second time CEPOL onsite course: Forensics – Emerging Technologies.

More specifically, activity 64/2024/ONS was organised in cooperation with the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI)Arrow icon and took place from 21 to 25 October 2024 in the town of Strassen. Nine expert trainers from France, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Luxembourg shared their knowledge and expertise with 25 participants from 15 different European countries.

The course included 16 sessions covering the below main thematic areas:

  • Facial Recognition – An introduction to facial recognition, automated facial recognition technology, and forensic facial examination.
  • Digital Signature – An introduction to the examination of digitally captured signatures, with biometric data used to determine the authorship of a signature.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) – Introduction to machine learning applications and the processing and understanding of natural language.
  • Reporting and Prüm II – A focus on report evaluation in line with ENFSI guidelines and forensic intelligence criteria, alongside discussions on regulations for automated data exchange in police cooperation.
  • Multimedia Forensics – An overview of tools that extract investigative evidence from images, videos, or audio, gathering information about the origin and authenticity of these media types.
  • ABIS – Presentation on the legal and operational history of fingerprint comparisons in Luxembourg, as well as the implementation of a new biometric ABIS system.

The aim of this CEPOL training activity was to update law enforcement officials on the latest technological advances in forensics, enabling them to manage cases more effectively and stay informed on recent developments across Europe in this field.
