Training activity in Cyprus focuses on trafficking in human beings – labour exploitation

The onsite training activity of the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training (CEPOL) 08/2023/ONS on “Trafficking in Human Beings – Labour Exploitation”, organised by the Cyprus Police, took place from 14 to 17 November, 2023 in Larnaca, Cyprus in close cooperation with CEPOL, the European Labour Authority (ELA), the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) and Europol.
The opening ceremony on 14 November included speeches by the Chief of Police, Mr. Stelios Papatheodorou, by representatives of the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance and the Minister of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus, as well as Mr. Pedro Assares, Head of Enforcement and Analysis Unit of the European Labour Authority.
In his speech, the Chief of Police said that the crime of human trafficking is constantly taking new forms, with the Law Enforcement Authorities being asked to take drastic measures to deal with it. He added that through the specific training activity, both lecturers and participants will have the opportunity to analyse and examine best practices for dealing with this serious problem.
During the course, experts from the Cyprus Police, the Ministry of Labour & Social Insurance, the French and Spanish Gendarmerie, the Greek Police, the Dutch Public Prosecutor's Office, the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA), Europol and the European Labour Authority (ELA) presented lectures and moderated workshops.
The training was attended by 30 participants from 15 EU Member states, one non- EU country and one EU Agency, and among them were prosecutors, labour inspectors, police officers and border guards.
