Last week the Federal Police Academy of the Ministry of the Interior in Austria implemented the CEPOL course 49/2019 on “Law Enforcement Leadership Development – Future Leaders – Module 2”. The activity took place from 11 to 15 November 2019 in the Police Academy in Vienna, Austria.

The overall aim of this multi-modular training activity was to foster the network of future leaders in policing in order to encourage collaborative ways of working across the EU law enforcement environment.

The course was attended by 22 participants from 20 different EU Member states. As it was designed for a mixed audience, the 22 CEPOL participants were joined by one additional participant from Iceland and one participant from the EU-Agency FRONTEX. The Activity was supported by several international and national trainers who gave their insights on how to bring EU instruments/ legislation into police practice and employ the possibilities for a joint approach within the EU. They reflected on topics such as "Police reform and future challenges", "Management tasks and decision-making" and "Political developments and their impact on the police".

The activity also featured a panel discussion with Dr. Detlef Schröder (CEPOL Executive Director) and Brigadier General Gerald Tatzgern (Head of the JOO – Joint Operational Office against Human Smuggling/THB). The panel discussion was moderated by the head of the national CEPOL unit, Mr Colonel Haberler. Together with the 24 participants, the two top leaders reflected and discussed their many years of experience in dealing with key political actors at local, national and European level.

Furthermore, the participants were grateful for being given the chance to expand their professional network and started to make use of professional platforms to stay in contact and to further exchange experiences.
