During the first week of June, the Updating and Specialisation Center in Madrid, Spain, hosted CEPOL course 29/2014 - Forensic science including DNA and policing challenges. A total of 28 participants, one from each EU country, attended and were assisted by seven experts from the most prestigious laboratories and universities.
DNA analysis for forensic purposes is a scientific field that is constantly evolving. Major technological advances can be applied to this discipline that seeks clarification of the responsibility of criminal acts, the identification of bodies in major disasters or the study of kinship. Professionals who are dedicated to this type of genetic testing for identification purposes need to keep updating their skills.
This course has facilitated this update. The experts used for this course are among the most renowned scientists in their field, demonstrated by the large number of scientific articles published, active participation in conferences and the recognition that the forensic community gives them.
For working professionals this was a unique opportunity to directly access their knowledge and raise any questions for problems being encountered in the study of real cases.
This kind of training, through the exchange of information, definitely improves the quality of genetic testing of all European forensic institutions.
