Firearms- Cross-border investigations - CEPOL 29/2017

In the Police Academy in Zagreb, Croatia, CEPOL Course 29/2017 on Firearms – cross-border investigations was held from 3 to 5 July 2017. 33 police officers from the EU Member States, WB and MENA countries had the opportunity to be introduced to up-to-date information to strengthen the capacity for successful international investigations linked to firearms, by developing the skills supporting the prevention of illegal use of firearms and enhancing police cooperation in this field. Experienced trainers coming from the police, government sector from Spain, Portugal and Croatia, as well as the representatives from EUROPOL talked about that how to explore possibilities for deploying firearms tracing as a routine procedure and understand relevant forensic service providers and the possibilities and limitations of forensic science.

Special attention was given to promote EU cooperation (Europol, Eurojust, Interpol, JITs, CDs, third parties, etc) and establish contacts with partners in specific regions and in source countries. Participants – police officers specialized in firearms investigation- were engaged in the group discussion with real case scenarios and had an opportunity to share their best practices and experiences in combating that type of crime.

The participants were provided with the overview on firearms legislation and collecting data in some EU countries.
