CEPOL training activity in Portugal strengthens law enforcement skills to fight MTIC Fraud

Lisbon training

The CEPOL onsite course 20/2023 on Missing Trader Intra Community (MTIC) Fraud took place from 19-23 June, in Lisbon. It was organised jointly by the Portuguese Guarda Nacional Republicana´s School of Guard and the Fiscal Action Unit, under the umbrella of the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training (CEPOL). The aim was to improve information exchange and cooperation between EU Member States and EU law enforcement agencies and provide participants with the knowledge, skills and tools to identify, detect and combat MTIC Fraud, criminal modus operandi and the latest crime patterns, with a view to protecting the EU's financial interests.

28 learners and two observers from different Member States and European Institutions, such as Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Norway, Poland, The Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Portugal and Europol participated in this course. The course was based on training sessions hosted by renowned national and international speakers and trainers from institutions such as Europol, The European Public Prosecutor's Office, Eurojust and Member States, including Norway, and Portugal (Portuguese Tax Authority and Judiciary Police).

The sessions had both theoretical and practical components, while several case studies were presented to share the acquired knowledge and experiences and contribute to the formalisation of a common vision of fighting crime in the European Union.

Within the scope of this activity, the Guarda Nacional Republicana organised a visit to its General Headquarters and Museum, where it was possible for those involved to learn about the history and nature of this century-old organisation.
