A team of CEPOL and European Judicial Training NetworkArrow icon (EJTN) experts has been involved in a workshop session on Joint Investigation Teams, held at Brdo near Kranju (Slovenia) from 26 to 28 May 2014.

The workshop was attended by 19 participants from three EU and six non-EU countries. The activity was delivered under the umbrella of the Police Cooperation Convention for Southeast EuropeArrow icon (PCC SEE). The Democratic Control of Armed ForcesArrow icon (DCAF) foundation was tasked with the implementation of the whole project; the workshop was initiated and chaired by the Head of DCAF - Ljubljana, Mr Anton Travner.

During the two day workshop, 19 senior officials from national or federal prosecution and police services developed awareness of the concept of Joint Investigation Teams (JITs), and during four breakout sessions were able to put this into practice by carrying out a joint investigation scenario involving EU Member states and 3rd States.

The workshop paved the way for closer cooperation between judicial and police authorities of the PCC SEE members and between the JITs experts networks of the EU and PCC SEE signatory countries.

Having a mixed audience of prosecutors and senior police officers has proven very effective in JITs training and the satisfaction of all participants confirms the validity of the training model; a model developed by CEPOL, the European Judicial Training Network and the JITs expert secretariat at EurojustArrow icon.

“ The JITs workshop was well organised by our PCC SEE partners. The CEPOL scenario was excellent; prosecutors and police managers from EU Member States and neighbouring countries performing their own role in a common joint investigation. This is how we should reinforce mutual trust and initiate further cooperation in training and operations”. - Jean Marie Fiquet, course manager.
