From 6 to 17 June, Romania hosted the CEPOL course 37/2016 "Forensic science and policing challenges". The aim of this activity was to increase awareness of modern forensic techniques and their impact on policing, as well as of developments and initiatives taken at EU level towards a harmonised approach to forensics.

Among the topics covered at the course were the following:

  • application of EN ISO/IEC 17025 requirements in forensic laboratories;
  • controversies between criminalistics and forensic medicine in determining the shooting direction;
  • the importance of crime scene investigation in the examination of questioned documents.

Participants could also attend a practical exercise where Mr. Florin Lăzău, the first certified forensic artist from Europe, applied specific techniques in order to make the portrait of a ficticious suspect by relying upon the simulated victim’s information.
