CEPOL course 12/2017 aimed for topic “Missing Trader Intra Community fraud - MTIC”

CEPOL course 12/2017 aimed for topic “Missing Trader Intra Community fraud - MTIC” was held in Bratislava, Slovakia from 10th to 13th of October 2017.

The aim of the course was to:
- increase the protection of financial interests of the European Community in fighting VAT/TAX fraud via facilitating the exchange of information, experiences and best practices.
- enhance knowledge about the instruments and techniques in fighting MTIC
- improve, upgrade and share knowledge about fraud prevention, detection and investigation techniques.

The course was organised by the Academy of the Police Force in Bratislava in conjunction with the National Crime Agency of the Presidium of Police Force of the Slovak Republic together with the supporting countries, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary and EUROPOL as well.

In this CEPOL course 12/2017 attended 27 participants from 17 EU member states.

After the opening speech by the Rector of the Academy of the Police Force in Bratislava Mrs. Lucia Kurilovská and Deputy Director of National Crime Agency of the Presidium of Police Force of the Slovak Republic Mr. Patrik Jurík the first day´s show was “stolen” by the view of National Financial Police Unit as well as Financial Intelligence Unit on tackling MTIC within the territory of the Slovak Republic.

The second day was dedicated to view of EUROPOL, Criminal Office of Financial Administration and National Financial Police Unit to the presentations dedicated to fraud cases in Slovakia with regards to investigate, fight and tackle MTIC. Case study “stone” had been presented as well.

The third day started off with the presenters of workshops and covered theirs view how to solve the case “Stone” that was presented by Slovakia a day earlier. Many other topics from supporting countries had been presented, as this was a day of international cooperation.

The course emphasised the importance of establishing the network as a factor which can contribute to positive outcomes for international law enforcement cooperation.

With the aid of the Learning Management System (LMS) within CEPOL’s e-Net, the online evaluation of the course completed by the participants highlighted the need of meetings at international level to discuss and tackle “MTIC” phenomenon.

„Creating connections between law enforcement officials was the most important outcome from this course. It was also interesting to hear how different countries tackle MTIC frauds“
