New SIS in force today: CEPOL’s training on EU’s top information exchange system for security and border management

SIS

Today, the Schengen Information System (SIS) is enhanced with new functionalitiesArrow icon, as the new SIS legal framework[1] enters into force. The SIS is the most important information exchange system for security and border management in the EU, used by millions of users in their daily work. It allows law enforcement authorities, border authorities and EU agencies to share information in a timely manner and to support operational cooperation, ensuring a high level of security in the European Union, as well as contributing to migration management.

In anticipation of these important developments, the EU Agency for Law Enforcement Training (CEPOL) is upgrading its offer with specialised training opportunities, to help support EU law enforcement officials dealing with SIS in their daily work.

Our training offer on SIS includes, among others, self-paced training, available for registered users of our Law Enforcement Education platform, LEEdArrow icon.

Updated online module ‘SIS for end-users’Arrow icon, for law enforcement or judicial staff who use SIS either for carrying out queries or creating alerts (or both): This module aims to introduce the end-users to the novelties and functionalities of the Renewed SIS. Upon completion, users will gain a better understanding of newly implemented document descriptions, object extensions and the use of SIS data security and protection requirements.

Updated online module ‘SIS for SIRENE’, available only to Supplementary Information Request at the National Entries (SIRENE)Arrow icon operators[2]: This module aims to improve the level of knowledge and skills among SIRENE operators, to help improve the quality of cooperation between the SIRENE Bureaux and the effective use of SIS. It also introduces the novelties in the exchange of supplementary information in relation to the renewed SIS, including the use of new and renewed SIRENE forms.

Recorded webinar 3049/2022 SIS recast: new data elements in SIS, and how to use them (person alerts):Arrow icon The aim of this webinar, organised in cooperation with the European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice​ (eu-LISAArrow icon), is to present the novelties introduced by the new SIS regulations and the use of new data elements in SIS regarding person alerts.

Recorded webinar 3051/2022/WEB 'The renewed Schengen Information System (SIS): refresher training':Arrow icon The aim of this webinar is to ensure proper implementation of Schengen Information System in EU Member States.

These training activities have been developed by the CEPOL Knowledge Centre on Law Enforcement Cooperation, Information Exchange and Interoperability (CKC INT). By bringing together the very best experts in the field from law enforcement in EU Member States, agencies and the European Commission, CKC INT contributes to both the design and implementation of these specific CEPOL training programmes.

In addition to the above training offer, CEPOL will implement this year two CEPOL webinars on SIS: 3010/2023/WEB: SIS Recast (the SIS information alerts), and 3011/2023/WEB: SIS Recast (the SIS Handbook), while in October 2023, CEPOL onsite course 56/2023: Schengen Evaluation – SIS/SIRENE, is planned take place in the Czech Republic. Information regarding these upcoming training activities will be provided on our website, closer to their implementation date.

[2] SIRENE operators that cannot access the module are requested to contact the moderators of the LEEd Platform for SIRENE Operators via their Head of SIRENE.
