'Learning-by-doing’ approach in mock trial delivers great results

image

Judiciary and law enforcement officials from four MENA partner countries participated in a mock trial in Lisbon, Portugal. It’s a part of the CEPOL CT INFLOW project. The onsite activity enhanced regional cooperation, practical skills, and knowledge sharing. Those are critical for successful investigations and prosecutions of terrorism cases.

Between 2 and 6 December, in the learning-by-doing approach, 19 judges, prosecutors, and other law enforcement officials from Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Morocco worked on an imaginative terrorism case. They all acted out their natural roles but had the unique opportunity to work together from the beginning of the case, discuss possible procedural issues, and find common solutions applicable to their everyday work. Through the activity, shared knowledge and, most importantly, strengthened regional cooperation on counter-terrorism tools, legal framework, and institutional infrastructure to prosecute and adjudicate terrorism cases.

The idea of the mock trial is to create a learning experience based upon an imaginative but realistic criminal case and to let the participants use their previous knowledge practically, as well as the new one provided by experts supporting the exercise.
