Taking the floor during the working session on cybercrime and virtual currencies, Ms. Marín López underlined that financial investigation capacities stand out as one of the core capability gaps to be addressed through training:

The EU Strategic Training Needs Assessment (EU-STNA) has identified a number of requirements for skills and knowledge enhancement in this area, ranging from general basic knowledge on financial investigation and asset recovery to new crime patterns, including the evolution of fraud and financial crime in the age of cybersecurity.

She also took the opportunity to explain how CEPOL contributes to the fight against such crimes, by offering EU law enforcement specialised training:

CEPOL is delivering training activities on the topic of cryptocurrencies, organised by the CEPOL Cybercrime Academy and the CEPOL Knowledge Centre on Counterterrorism. Law enforcement officials can gain an overall understanding of the crypto ecosystem. They will also learn about different elements of such crimes, i.e. criminal uses and tools for crypto investigations, ways to obtain evidence from exchanges or how to size cryptocurrencies.
